New festival for Newcastle…

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

It’s time for Newcastle to celebrate, educate and enjoy everything good about good beer. And we’ll be there to help out. What used to be a stand-alone festival at Warners At The Bay over the last five years has evolved into Newcastle Craft Beer Week. Stretching between November 21-27, all the best beer venues around the Steel City will be busy hosting dinners, masterclasses, pub crawls and even a few lessons on cooking with beer with Paul Mercurio. Brad will be at the Craft Beer Dinner at the Albion Hotel on Thursday night and we’ll also be pouring beers at Warners At The Bay on Sunday from 12pm. For information on tickets, click here. We’re really looking forward to this one, see you there.

Local pig out…

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

The teams at Harvest Café and Stone & Wood Brewery have come up with an exciting way to indulge in the amazing local food and beer from our region. The wood fired stove will be cranking out fresh bread and a suckling pig, which together with local cheeses and salami will be matched by three Stone & Wood brews, including the last of this year’s hard-to-find Stone Beer. There will also be tunes by Black Billy Goat, so book now for what will be a great way to spend Sunday afternoon at Harvest Café, Newrybar, starting at 2.30pm. Tickets $60 per person.

surf, music & beer…yes, that’s us!

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

We’re stoked to be hosting the opening event for the inaugural Byron Bay Surf Festival.

Legendary surfer Bob McTavish will be kicking things off with some photos and stories from when he first discovered Byron in the ’60s. He’ll be doing some live shaping too. Then it’s bands The Haldanes Daughters (led by former pro-surfer Neil Purchase Jnr) and The Otchkies providing tunes for the rest of the night. Plus wood-fired pizzas and lashings of fresh beer for all!

Entry is free and everyone, including children, are more than welcome.

A bit more info from the Byron Bay Surf Festival press release…

“Bob McTavish, truly one of international surfing’s most influential thinkers and presenters, kicks off the festival on Friday night at the Stone and Wood Brewery where he will not only demonstrate some of the sport’s most forward thinking board shaping ideas (with a live demonstration) but he will shoot the breeze with the audience spinning hilarious yarns about the earliest days of modern surfing in Australia (the 1960s) and how he, along with other surfers, brought their beliefs and lifestyles to beautiful but quiet and conservative country towns like Byron Bay and Lennox Head. Bob’s story about his first trip to Hawaii (where he and his mate stowed away on a passenger vessel) and his ensuing run-in with the Hawaiian authorities paints an interesting picture of where many of our surfing legends started their careers in the public eye! Anyone who has seen one of Bob’s presentations will vouch for the fact that this is not an evening to be missed.”

back on the road

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

Now that the 2011 brew of Stone Beer is getting out and about, it’s time for us to get on the road and chase it around the country to catch up with some good beer people. The Festival of the Stone celebrations in Byron Bay and Melbourne were a real buzz for us this year and now we’re planning our road trips to meet up with some people in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart and Fremantle.

One of the great things about working in the craft brewing industry is being able to pack your bags and head off to some of the best pubs in the land and drink good beer with good beer people.

We’ll be at The Local Taphouses (Syd and Melb), Harts Pub, Riverview, Beer Deluxe, Cookie, Great Northern, The New Sydney, The Wheaty, Sail & Anchor, Clancy’s, and many more over the next couple of months, so we look forward to sharing a Stone Beer with you soon.

We had a lot of fun brewing it, and we hope you have fun drinking it!

Keep an eye on our facebook page or follow us on twitter for more details as we hit road!

Check the Where to Get It page of our website for stockists of 2011 Stone Beer.

Cheers

Jamie, Ross and Brad

festival time …

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Rolling out our Stone Beer every year is always cause for celebration. We have a lot of fun brewing it, but we also think it’s important to have some fun when the medieval brew is ready to drink. We’ve always celebrated tapping the first Stone Beer kegs with a party at the brewery, but this year we’ve decided to expand.

Festival Of The Stone is going down on July 23 from 3pm till 11pm. There’ll be music (four bands) food (wood-fired pizzas plus Stone Beer sausages from the local butcher) pop-up market stores and a preview of the beautiful surf film “El Mar Mi Alma”. Oh yeah and plenty of fresh beer. Entry is $10, which gets you a Stone Beer, and you can buy tickets here or at the gate on the day.

We’re planning on taking the Festival on the road this year too, so stand by for some news about a Melbourne event soon!

the wait is almost over

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

For the last few months we have been frustrated by not being able to keep up with the growing thirst for our beer. Week after week we seem to be working hard at producing as much beer as we can only to see it disappear from under our noses quicker than we can brew it. We’re sure some people are disappointed to see empty shelves at their local store as they go looking for a fresh Lager or Pacific Ale, and we are really sorry that you may have been unable to buy our beer when you were hanging out for one, but thanks for your patience and understanding.

The good news is that our new tanks are due to arrive in a few weeks, and we will be brewing into them within days of them being unpacked.

Being short for tank space has also meant that we have had to delay the release of this year’s Stone Beer. A year is a long time between drinks for those fans of our medieval brew, but we now have a brew day locked in and are planning the party to celebrate the roll out on July the 23rd. We are creating The Festival of the Stone – a night of tunes, art, film and of course plenty of freshly tapped Stone Beer. Stand by for more details in the next couple of weeks.

So the wait is almost over … thanks again for the support and encouragement and we hope to see you at the brewery or on our travels in the next few months.

Cheers

it’s good beer week

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

Yes, there is such a thing as Good Beer Week, and we’re heading to down to Melbourne to be part of the action. The whole week is chock a block full of events that all pay homage to good beer.

We’ll be involved in a number of events such as Brewers and Chewers at The Local Taphouse in St Kilda, Happy Hour at The Courthouse Hotel in Nth Melbourne with the crazy guys from Elbowskin, the Hair of the Dog breakfast at Beer Deluxe at Fed Square with the guys at beermentv, and the Great Beer Debate at Ormond Hall on St Kilda Road.

During the week a special release of our Kellerbier will also be on tap at the Terminus Hotel in Clifton Hill and the Royston in Richmond.

It’s certainly going to be a big week, so if you are going to be in Melbourne, get along to some of the events and enjoy some good beer.

We hope to see you there and share a brew with you.

Cheers

red receipts & upcoming things

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

It was never going to be a hard sell, really. To help raise money for flood effected Queenslanders, all people had to do was drink some of our Red Relief Ale, because all the proceeds (apart from the tax) were going straight to the premier’s flood relief fund. With the last of the beer now gone and thanks to the pubs and bars that were good enough to put it on tap, we’ve got a pile of donation receipts that tally over $15,000.

A mighty effort. Cheers to everyone that got involved, especially our good friends at: The Spotted Cow, Grand Central (Bris), Pig n Whistle, Melbourne Hotel, Local Taphouse, Royston, Rails, Montague, Courthouse (Melb), Terminus, Great Northern (Melb), Archive, Wheatsheaf, Yullis, Harts, Earth n Sea, Beer Deluxe, Rusty Water and New Sydney who helped raise the money.

Good beer events…

Hold onto your livers ladies and gentlemen, because May is shaping up to be an epic month for beer lovers. First, we’ll be pouring beers at the first Ministry Of Beer, Craft Beer Festival being held at Archive in Brisbane on Sunday, May 1st. Tickets have already sold out, so if you haven’t got one, start scouring eBay. A short recovery and then we’ll be down in Melbourne for the seven glorious days that make up Good Beer Week. There are too many events to detail, being held across Melbourne and Victoria from May 16-22, so click here for more info. Hopefully see you somewhere along the way.

Save the date…

Brad has already ordered the specialty grains and pulled out his stash of rocks, which means it must nearly be Stone Beer time again. For those that don’t know, Stone Beer is a limited release brew we do once a year, where we throw hot stones in the kettle to help caramelise the natural sugars in the brew.

This year’s batch is going to be a little different from the last two and to celebrate we’re going to hold a “Festival of the Stone” here at the brewery on Saturday, July 23. There’ll be a heap of bands, food stalls and of course the first kegs of Stone Beer. Jump on our Facebook page here for more details.

this’ll be specTAPular !

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Right at the moment there are breweries around the country working up some real treats for next month’s Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular. The brainchild of the beer bar gurus at The Local Taphouses in Sydney and Melbourne, the GAB SpecTAPular is sure to be a day to remember for beer lovers.

22 of the best craft breweries in Australia are brewing away to create a special brew for this festival. The beers will be either “one offs” created especially for the event, or the pre-release of some new beers.

We are brewing up a special little brew that we will be showcasing at the event, and no, we won’t be telling you anymore about it. It’s real secret squirrel stuff!

The events will be raising funds for the Red Cross Queensland Food Appeal, so you’ll be able to drink some good beer and do some good all at the same time!

So put a big ring around the 12th of February in your diary and make sure you get along to either of The Local Taphouses in St. Kilda or Darlinghurst.

We’ll see you there!

Cheers

show ‘n’ shine at the brewery

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Come along to the Surf Market at our brewery, a show ‘n’ shine featuring local surfboards, surf photography, fins and artworks. There’ll also be music, short films, fresh beer, a BBQ and an auction for a huge hamper full of goodies with allprofits going to Troy Jackson, a local surfer who is currently in need of some help for a serious health issue.

Featuring craft by Rhythmsticks, Zed, Vouch, Emery and Skerry, and introducing the girls from Tallow. There will also be surf photography by John Milek and other random stuff like the surf / art diary from Happy Days.

If you dig a bit of surf culture, come and hang out. If you dig locally brewed beer, come and hang out. If you feel like raising a bit of money for a great cause, come and hang out. Everyone’s welcome.
