There are 480,000 carers under the age of 25 in Australia: we recently learn this through the Carers Foundation Australia. These young people tend to miss out on the experiences that mark our teens and early adulthood, often putting them behind in their studies, career aspirations and personal lives.
Shortly after learning this, we were introduced to a young carer called Nicholas through the Carers Foundation, who’ve supported Nicholas in his schooling and university studies while he cares full-time for his brother who lives with a disability.
The Foundation’s Joy and Inspiration Project gives young carers within the Foundation the opportunity to fulfil a dream or do something they’re passionate about. For Nicholas, this was brewing.
So, in May this year, we welcomed Nicholas to our brewery in Byron Bay so he could spend the day milling, mashing, boiling and getting hands-on in the brewing process – and of course, tasting and talking through our beers.
A big thanks to Nicholas for his energy and enthusiasm on the day; it’s not everyday you meet someone with his story and commitment to family and his own aspirations in the face of considerable challenges. We wish him and the Carers Foundation the very best!
Thank you, too, to our brewers Jess and Joshy, and Bootsy for helping to organise this awesome day.
