Stone Brew Day’s become an Autumn tradition, bringing the team, our friends and family together to brew our seasonal winter release… Stone Beer.
With the lights turned off for Earth Hour, we congregated under the dark night’s sky, around the steady glow of the wood fire, waiting to see the annual ritual of the hot stones be plucked one by one from the coal and embers.
Although just one part of a night that’s filled with beers, good hearty food by 100 Mile Table, catching up and brewing, the ritual of coming together for this part of the evening is something that those have seen it seem to always remember and talk about. Whether it’s how the stones glowed red or how the brewers, bestowed with the task of dragging the steel caged basket of volcanic rocks up onto the brew deck, faces glistening with sweat, lowered the cage into the kettle sending a plume of steam, illuminated by candle and lantern light, billowing toward the shed’s roof, it’s a special moment we and those who are a part of the brew day love!
This traditional process is a tribute to the ancient techniques used long before electricity. It’s about remembering what brewing local beer is all about, celebrating beer and its origins within the community and bringing people together for the fun of it.
Our Stone Beer is made for drinking on cold winter nights and is always big and dark. The hot stones being added to the kettle intensify the malt characters of our special brew and when the caramelised brewing stones are added into the fermenter the subtle toffee like flavours become more rich (read more about the 2014 Stone Beer)
This one always takes a while in the tank so you will be seeing this one around just as Winter starts to kick in and yes, vintage packs with our limited release stone bottles (crocks) will be available for sale too.
We will be launching this beer at our favourite event ‘Festival of the Stone’ on 9 May, at the Stone & Wood Byron Brewery. Free entry and of course family friendly, we’ll have awesome street food to fill your bellies, live music, a DJ set by three of our mates from a well known Brissy band and more! Stay tuned for more details.
