Yep, this Saturday 1 June, Stone & Wood’s Byron Bay Brewery is the place you’ll want to be, ready to welcome Winter with music, community and the best brews.

Set times are a go!

Why do we celebrate Festival of The Stone every year?

Festival of the Stone 2024 will raise money for Byron Shire homeless hub, Fletcher Street Cottage. Byron Shire’s homelessness rate is currently the highest in NSW and Fletcher Street Cottage provides support, information, referral and advocacy to people at risk of homelessness and those already sleeping rough.

Festival of the Stone began as a celebration of Stone & Wood’s annual release of Stone Beer and the first tapping of the keg. The 2024 Stone Beer brew is a wood-fired porter ideal for chilly winter nights. A nod to medieval brewing, it’s a tradition held dear since Stone & Wood’s humble beginnings, seventeen years ago.

Every May since Stone & Wood began, alongside others in the brewing industry, Stone & Wood brews its woodfired porter Stone Beer in preparation for winter. This is called Stone Brew Day. A decadent porter with dark roasted malts is brewed to give coffee and dark chocolate flavours to the beer. Then, on an open fire, volcanic stones sourced from the nearby hinterland are heated, before being lowered, glowing-red into the kettle, which lends smoky caramel notes to the beer. The moment the woodfired stones touch the wort with a loud hisss is a moment for celebration. A month later, Stone Beer is tapped at the annual Festival of the Stone, where the community comes together to enjoy fresh beer, live music, good food and winter cheer.

What food will be at Festival of The Stone?

Those in need of sustenance at Festival of the Stone are in for a treat with some very tasty options available. From handmade and freshly baked Byron Bay Pretzels to artisan pizza from Gunter’s Flammkuchen and delicious wurst from The Kranski Sisters food truck, you won’t go hungry! Plus, masters of the grill, Traegar will be on ground doing BBQ demos and sampling.

Festival of The Stone is Family Friendly!

Bringing the ankle biters along? Festival of the Stone has that covered too with Malt Disney Art & Craft Zone. Malt Disney is a free style creative area where kids can let their maker imagination run wild with paints, collage, mask making, drawing, crown creating, play doh and more. Plus there’s garden games galore to keep them engaged and burning up that energy!

For the easiest access to Festival of the Stone, catch the Festival Shuttle Service. For up-to-date information about road closures, parking and bus services check out the FAQ section on the website.

One of Australia’s most loved singer-songwriters Dan Sultan’s trophy shelf holds an incredible 7 ARIA Awards, alongside NIMA Awards, Top 5 ARIA-charting albums, and an ARIA-certified gold record. With countless sold-out headline shows in his wake, he’s also toured with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Midnight Oil and Vance Joy, and played Australia’s biggest festivals including Splendour in the Grass, Blues Festival and Falls to name a few. He’ll add Festival of the Stone to that list on 1 June!

It’s almost impossible not to recognise a Beddy Rays track, a carefully curated recipe involving all the right ingredients: heartfelt lyrics, huge hooks, mosh-worthy riffs and a lingering sense of comradery and good vibes that underpins everything they create. It’s seen them land plays on triple j’s Hottest 100 and Hottest 100 Like a Versions of all time, an ARIA nomination for ‘Breakthrough Artist’ and spots on festivals around the country. With a knack for knowing how to have a bloody good time, everyone wants to be friends with Beddy Rays.

Ultimate purveyors "pub-pop" goodness, The Beefs founded their musical haven in 2018 when frontman Sammy Smith decided to round up some talented mates and cook up a musical feast for the ages. Marinated together with catchy hooks and relatable lyrics, and voilà - you've got the signature sound of The Beefs. Hailing from Perth, VERGE COLLECTION balance classic pop sensibilities with working class poetry to channel the collective conscious of suburban Australian milennials. Songwriter and front-man Ben Arnold’s songs have the ability to hoist you high to the point of chills and a stupid grin, before making you plummet just as quickly into an existential nosedive.

AKA Lui seamlessly fuses disco and psychedelia to create a sound that is uniquely his own. His debut single catapulted him into the spotlight, earning critical acclaim and over 2 million streams on Spotify alone. Recent tracks like "Kick It", "Lighthouse", and "Fool" have continued to captivate audiences both in Australia and abroad and with the upcoming release of his debut EP Sapphire Blue on June 21st, AKA Lui is set to confirm his status as a rising star in Australian music.

Bursting with sun-soaked melodies and an electric live set it’s no surprise that Brisbane (Meanjin) indie-pop 5-piece Mid Drift have quickly become a crowd favourite in their hometown and are gaining a loyal fan base interstate. Uplifting and exciting, each set from this party-starting pro masterfully weaves a mix of old school and new school. Cashew’s ability to read the room has dancefloors up and down the east coast pumping, delivering satisfaction every time.

Versatile, distinctive and relentlessly fun, a night with Cashew is one you won’t want to miss.

Bringing the heat, we've got Yazmin on the lineup. With a career spanning back to 2013, Yazmin has rocked dance floors across Australia, Indonesia, and the UK. Now, back on home soil, she’s here to share her love for dance music and club favourites!

Her journey has taken her to some of London's hottest clubs and events, including Printworks with Amnesia Ibiza, Ministry of Sound, Egg Club, South West Four Festival and Electric Brixton, to name a few.

With additional sets from Bean Dip, Dan Muz, Reiflex, Mase vs. Kane, and Sammond, the vibes will be high amongst the brewing tanks...so if you're ready to get sweaty, the DJs will be spinning just the tunes to get you grooving.

Come celebrate the annual Release of Stone Beer

With meticulous care, we’ve created this limited-edition winter brew using the best ingredients we could find, including select Australian malts. Stone beer boasts aromatic notes of brewed coffee, rich dark chocolate, and hints of subtly smoked barley.

Grooving for a good cause

Festival of the Stone 2024 will raise money for Byron Shire homeless hub, Fletcher Street Cottage. Byron Shire’s homelessness rate is currently the highest in NSW and Fletcher Street Cottage provides support, information, referral and advocacy to people at risk of homelessness and those already sleeping rough.

“We believe it’s a really important time to support Australian music, events and our community. With Splendour and other festivals having a year off, we’re injecting a little more love into the music side of things this year. Live music in Australia ain’t going anywhere. And with Byron having one of the highest homeless populations in the nation, now is as important as ever to support those sleeping rough. We’re happy to support Fletcher St Cottage’s incredible work in this area for the 10th year in a row.” – James Aris, Stone & Wood Marketing Manager.

Wild For Wilderness – Raising Money for Our National Parks

We are so proud to be supporting our mates over at Pony Rider and The National Project as we bring to life the inaugural Wild For Wilderness Van Life festival. The goal of Pony Rider’s #TheNationalProject is to raise funds to support a ‘Land Buy Back’ scheme, where areas of land are bought to protect, regenerate, grow and create new Aussie National Parks.

Based in the Glenworth Valley and spread over two days, the Van Life event features adventure films and IRL adventures by day and live music under the stars by night. For the keen ones, there’s kayaking, hiking, mountain biking or horse riding, and for those feeling more zen, we’ve got breathwork, yoga and native food walks. Heading back into the campsite, there’s food trucks, cold beers, live music and good times.

Tickets are $150 per person and if sleeping in your wheels isn’t your thing, there’s a limited number of glamping sites too. 20% from ticket sales and all proceeds from the bar will be donated, along with other initiatives throughout the weekend.

Q&A with Rossco

Before the endless summer begins, let’s get to know the enigma that is Stone & Wood’s Rossco.

Where in the world do you hail from?

I’ve lived all over this wide, brown land! Born and raised in country SA, but completed my high schooling and university degree in Ballarat, Victoria. Since then, I’ve quite literally ‘seen the light’ 😁 and moved to Ballina in 2020, and I’m lucky to now call the Northern Rivers home.

What inspired your move up to the Northern Rivers?

There aren’t too many Aussies that didn’t feel the impacts of COVID-19, Victorian’s especially! 2020 was meant to be a big year for my athletic career (basketball), and I had grand plans for the season ahead.

When the lockdowns hit, I had plenty of reflection time (and beer drinking time!). I had a change of heart and decided I was more suited to the laidback surfer lifestyle that Byron promises. Mum’s side of the fam also live in Ballina, so it made a lot of sense to relocate up here.

What’s been your greatest adventure?

When I finished high school in 2014, I decided to take a gap year and backpack Europe. This would easily go down as my greatest adventure! I was young, naive and had a hunger for exploration and new experiences. This adventure taught me so much about the world but also about myself and so I always recommend travelling as much as you can!

Some of the lessons I learned along this journey weren’t cheap. In Beijing I was scammed by two sweet old Chinese women – but that’s a story to share over a Pacific Ale…or 3!

Favourite place you’ve discovered on a road trip?

This is an easy one! When I was 11, my parents sold the house and bought a caravan to circumnavigate Australia. It was on this voyage that we stopped in a small place in northern WA called Ningaloo Reef. Ningaloo was nature’s theme park to an 11-year-old grommet like myself. We went diving with whale sharks, snorkelling with sea turtles, reef sharks and dolphins…right off the beach we were camping on!

What’s your all-time Aussie holiday spot?

For this one I would have to go with Kangaroo Island in South Australia. I have an uncle and Aunt who live in Kingscote there and my family have holidayed there for as long as I can remember. I have so many special memories from that place such as learning to fish and catch crabs from my uncle’s boat. The beaches are pristine and the island itself has such a low population that you can escape all the noise of the mainland.

You’ve just come in from a swim on the beach, what do you choose for lunch – fish & chips, old school burger or vegan sushi?

Fish & Chips is a timeless classic but to be completely honest, I would have to say that a burger hits the spot most often. Anything from Wagyu patty with the lot or something southern-fried…I think the burger wins! (Providing it comes with chips). Check out our fav Fish & Chips recipe.

And finally, best beer to crack open after a long day on the dusty road?

Nothing beats a Pacific Ale after a day on the road! I’ve been drinking these from back in my Ballarat days and I haven’t found a better beer to share a sunset with.

Stay tuned for more details and to follow Ross & Trev’s on the road adventures, make sure you’re following us on Instagram & Facebook.

Festival of The Stone Raises $20,000 For Byron's Homeless

We Came. We Partied. We Donated.

We’re stoked to announce our Festival of the Stone held on Saturday 3 June, raised $20,000 for Byron’s homeless and rough sleeping community service, Fletcher Street Cottage.

Over 1800 people passed through our gates to come together, shake off a tough start to the year and dance the night away for a good cause.

With an awesome musical line-up that appeared across two stages, local legends Drop Legs and Death By Denim packed out the mainstage with Melbourne rockers, The Delta Riggs capping off the night with an epic set.

Inside the Brewery, our brewtanks became the illuminated backdrop for one heady dancefloor as the Club Raiders DJS, Cashew and Yazmin dropped some fresh and frothy beats.

Most importantly, in the process of this revelry, all ticket, beer and raffle sales were steadily raising funds to go directly to Fletcher Street.

Outside of Sydney, the Byron Shire has the largest rough-sleeping population in Australia (even bigger than Melbourne’s), making the Fletcher Street Cottage and its services such a crucial part of the Byron community. They’re open every day, ready with breakfast, hot showers, laundry and counselling services for those in need.

Our Events Guru, Sally G, was blown away by the happy vibe brought by the big crowd on the day.

Sally said, “It’s such an honour to put on an event where locals can come together and really enjoy themselves. Holding it in support of such an important issue for our region, just adds that extra layer of meaning.

There was such a happy spirit here on Saturday, a good sign that big events in Byron are back and here to stay.”

Stone & Wood is proud to support Fletcher Street Cottage and other local grassroots organisations through our not-for-profit arm, the inGrained Foundation.

Song by South of Summit – Runaway

Cheers to our mates at Red Stockholm for capturing the night. Visit our Facebook page for the full collection of photos from the night.

Murbah Brewery Open Day - Stone & Wood Brewing Co.

Come to our Murbah Brewery's Open Day, Saturday 4 March.

Get along to our Murbah Open Day on 4 March and support the community’s charity of choice, The Wedgetail Retreat and Tweed Palliative Support.

As Murwillumbah’s local brewer, we can’t wait to re-open the brewery’s gates to the community…Our family friendly Open Day will run from 11-5, with entertainment, food, drinks and some fun for the kids, sorted!

We’ve lined up live tunes from Dos Loona, Holly Tapp and Tim Shou, a jumping castle and, Murbah Brewery tours running every half an hour, explaining our story, the brewing process and a few of our sustainability initiatives.

Food trucks JR Smokehouse and The Backyard Chef, two of the region’s best, will be pulling up to keep bellies full and Keith Coffee Shop and Barber will be making sure the crowd stays caffeinated…

Now lets talk about beer…. and not just any beer. We’ve brewed an exclusive Pilot Batch just for Open Day. Why is it so special? It’s an ode to the infamous ‘Murbah Swamp Beer’. A legendary local tale, where back in 2001, a semi trailer carrying pallets of beer ran off the Pacific Highway. Cartons of brews fell into the Tweed River…and the locals wasted no time in diving in to salvage what they could (some were still icey-cold). Check out the Murbah swamp beer video.

Our tribute ‘Murbah Swamp Beer’ will be tapped at Open Day alongside a few of our other refreshing brews. Beers will be $5 and there is a gold coin entry fee with all profits raised donated to the Wedgetail Retreat and Tweed Palliative Support, so they can continue their amazing work helping the community.

Lock in the date, Saturday 4 March, and get along to our second brewery’s Open Day to support an epic local cause.

Garden Parties - Stone & Wood Brewing Co

Garden Party - Event Listing

Influenced by the laid back lifestyle of our hometown in the Northern Rivers, our sessionable Garden Ale is best enjoyed with friends in a beer garden or a mate’s backyard, while kicking back and appreciating the simple things in life.

For us, this time of year is about making the most of the warm weather and long days, enjoying epic food, listening to live tunes, playing a few beer garden games and drinking sessionable beers….

In light of this, for the next three months we’re throwing Garden Parties across the country. So get along and join in on the good times, everyone’s welcome!

There’s only one thing we love more than drinking good beer served fresh inside the brewery, and that’s having great local food to complement it. Our Three & Three Dinner Series is all about bringing these things together under our roof.

You’re invited to come and enjoy a seated dinner staged within the brewery featuring three courses made from seasonal produce from the Byron Bay region perfectly matched by Monique and the team at Seaweed Cuisine with each of the three beers we brew and bottle right here at Stone & Wood.

In matching each course with our Pale Lager, Draught Ale and Stone Beer, Monique has planned a menu that makes the most of the locally farmed produce and freshly caught seafood.

Whether you’re a serious foodie, diehard beer nerd or just someone who enjoys one-of-a-kind experiences, this promises to be a fun night for everyone. We’re brewing up a special evening including some music, door prizes and maybe even an exclusive treat or two. For more details, you’ll just have to come along on the night!

Date:  September 11

Time: 7pm until late

Address: 4 Boronia Place, Byron Bay

There are only 100 seats available, so bookings are essential. Tickets cost $90 and cover all food and beer.
