Stone Brew Day: The making of Stone Beer 2026

Stone Beer is back! Brewed using one of brewing's oldest traditions, Stone Beer 2026 is a rich porter made with wood-fired stones, delivering layers of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and subtle smoke.

In mid May, we gathered in the brewery for one of our favourite annual rituals: Stone Brew Day. Heated over a wood fire before being lowered into the brew, the stones caramelise the malt, creating the rich, distinctive flavour that makes Stone Beer what it is.

Brewed just once a year and worth the wait. Stone Beer is available soon online, in our Byron Bay Tasting Room and at select bottle shops.

Cheers to Good Beer!

A few cold beers raised at AIBA night!

Last night, hundreds of good beer lovers and brewers packed the Melbourne Showground for the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) – the largest annual beer competition in the world. This year the awards attracted more than 1,700 entries from more than 320 breweries.

A massive shout out and thank you to the team across the Stone & Wood business. We’re so humbled by another great year of results at the AIBA. Good beer is our thing so for us, this is a nice pat on the back to acknowledge our consistency of quality.
We don’t brew for awards but receiving peer recognition for what we all strive to do day-in-day-out is an awesome achievement. Cheers to all of the other breweries that took home awards last night. Good beer is in a great place in Australia!

Introducing The Prequel - The Father of Pacific Ale

Celebrating 10 years of Galaxy Hops with The Prequel...

The father of Pacific Ale that never was…

The Prequel is an ultra-dry-hopped Australian style ale that pours hazy gold and full strength. The copious additions of Galaxy hops offer powerful aromas of passionfruit, pineapple, mango and citrus. Its bold hop character is refreshingly balanced by a low bitterness, finishing dry and crisp…

“Pacific Ale I am your father” (cue Star Wars theme music).

THE PREQUEL STORY

10 years ago, Stone & Wood co-founder Brad Rogers was brewing up a storm on a tiny brew kit in his hinterland shed. Those initial batches were hazy, cloudy and aromatic, driven by the then relatively unheard-of Galaxy hops.

The first trials shaped the future of not just our beers, but the Stone & Wood story as well. We were committed to brewing beer for the drinking occasions in our local area, and we knew that sessionable beers were an important part of that. So, from those early brews in Brad’s shed, we headed towards a beer sitting somewhere between four and five percent ABV, so that our drinkers could enjoy a few schooners of it.

These days session beers tend to be a lower ABV succession version of a stronger beer, but we skipped the stronger beer step and went straight ahead with brewing and launching our Draught Ale in 2008 that was then renamed Pacific Ale after we put it into a bottle in 2010.

Now looking back, we wondered if we had taken a different course 10 years ago and released a stronger higher ABV version of the beer what would it have been like.

So Pacific Ale never had a father…Until now.

A Handcrafted Perspective: Jenn Johnston Ceramics

Turning, throwing and creating clay into unique ceramic handcrafted pieces.

Talented people magnate to this part of the world. Most bring their experience and their passion, others find it… Jenn Johnston is the latter.

Working from an open-air studio in a quaint side street of Mullumbimby, Jenn is a local ceramicist. Spending her time turning, throwing and creating clay into unique ceramic pieces, she also runs workshops in the local area and helps coordinate the annual North Coast Mud Trail.

Jenn hooked the team up with beer steins as a part of our Christmas present last year and when you come to the brewery, you’ll see some sitting on desks acting as flower vases, others being held preciously in meetings, filled with hot coffee and a few being sipped from by the crew having knock off beers in the arvo.

Inspired by her craftsmanship, stunning ceramics and way of life, we spent some time catching up about all things clay, local life and the simple joys of creating something that’s handcrafted…

So, how did your love for creating and working with clay come about?
I had been drawn to ceramics for a number of years, particularly the mesmerising rhythm of the pottery wheel. In 2014, I visited some studios on the North Coast Mud Trail and met my first teacher, Karen Jennings. A few months later, my sister-in-law gave me a throwing course with Karen for my birthday and I was hooked!

Have you always found joy working with your hands?
Yes, but it took me a while to find my thing. I have always craved a creative outlet and in recent years I’ve experimented with various mediums – painting, paper work, cooking, gardening – most of which I don’t have time for, now that I’m obsessed with clay!

What excites you about being a ceramicist?
Clay is amazing. The endless possibilities excite me – what you make is really only limited by your imagination. Opening a kiln after a glaze firing is exciting, and nerve-racking – there’s no guarantee about how pieces are going to turn out. Working to create the pieces I see in my mind excites me, and nutting out the challenges along the way is really rewarding.

Where do you source your clay from?
Northern Rivers Pottery Supplies in Lismore – Madeline and Ove are great and have been really supportive of me over the last few years. Their business got smashed by the floods last year, so it’s great to be able to support them. They’re an important part of our local clay community.

Pursuing a creative career, what are a few challenges you have overcome/faced?
I’m trying to learn to love the paperwork and keeping on top of all the admin is a challenge; and there are definitely challenges in learning how to run a small business. I’m lucky to have some good friends and mentors who I can turn to for advice and guidance as my business grows.

Are elements of your life away from work influenced by pottery’s ‘slower more simple’ nature?
Working with clay has taught me many things, and has helped me to slow down and be more aware of my intentions and how I live my life. Living simply and thoughtfully is also made easier in the Northern Rivers – by the Farmers’ Markets, the creative and supportive community, the climate, the beautiful beaches and hinterland, all of which encourage us to slow down and appreciate what we have.

How often can you be found in the studio?… Do you stick to a 9-5 regimented schedule?
I work at the University of Sydney’s Centre for Rural Health 3 days a week, but pretty much any day I’m not there, I’m in the studio. The flow of my studio days depends a bit on what stage I’m up to in the making process. Most mornings, I’ll try to do an hour or so of admin or paperwork first. Once I’m in the studio. I’ll be on the wheel or hand-building, packing or unpacking the kiln, glazing, or packing pieces ready to be shipped to my stockists.

Talk to us about the North Coast Mud Trail and how it has grown over the years?
The North Coast Mud Trail is part of the national Australian Ceramics Association open studio weekend, held every year in August. The Northern Rivers has a big (and growing) community of potters and the Mud Trail is a great way for people to get out and see potters in their studios, participate in workshops, see demonstrations and buy pieces directly from the makers.

Do you have any secret projects lined up for the year ahead we should know about?
Well yes, but they’re secret so…

Share with us what inspires you most…
I have so much love for clay and what it has brought to my life. This is felt by people as they use my pieces and this, in turn, brings them joy.

A Local Perspective - Jess Flynn

Jess migrated to Byron in pursuit of her passions, waves, sunshine and a creative community...

We take a few moments to sit down with one of the crew and get to know a little bit about their life in the Northern Rivers.

Born in Canada, Jess migrated to Byron’s shores in pursuit of her passions, waves, sunshine and a creative community… Here she has set-up an incredible life, where in between creating positive change, teaching yoga and long boarding at the Pass/Wategos, she helps run our brewery’s Tasting Room and support our community program. An all round legend that were so thankful to have, read on to learn a little bit more about her life in our beautiful backyard…

Describe your perfect day in the Northern Rivers…
Waking up slow to good music, do a little yoga before heading to the ocean for a wave. Likely I’d sit at Tully’s for a long coffee or two, over a bit of knitting and a good book. If ambition was high I’d grab a mate and head down to Shelter in Lennox for a late brekky and hopefully another surf, otherwise just to take in that beautiful part of the coastline, or hit Ballina skate park. Back to the bay by the afternoon, snack on some dumplings, find the rest of my favourite people and take the longboards and a few beers to either Pass or Wategos for sunset. Stay salty and grab a bite at Taste of Melaka. Maybe a cheeky little cocktail or two and then I guess it would probably finish off with the good ol’ Rails/Northern combo dancing to my favourite music.

What excites you most about the area?
The community! How many passionate and inspiring people are living in such a small area; I’m constantly inspired by the driven creatives. We’re lucky!

Tell us about any local events you’ve attended recently
Byron Surf Fest just last month was an absolute hit. It doesn’t really get any better than bringing all the surf/ocean/environment/community frothers all together over waves and good beer. Also last weekend I hit up Jess Leitmanis’ art exhibit Excavations of the Deep – it’s phenomenal – go to Lone Goat gallery and check it out. As for dinners – I just got back from Sri Lanka and can’t stop making curry – so I’ve been loving having my mates round to cook for and test out recipes.

What’s your favourite local brand at the moment and why?
I can’t get enough of our local brands – so stoked on the quality of brands the Bay has to offer. In the water, I’m 100% wearing Atmosea for swimmers (they actually stay on in the surf) and their wetty’s are super comfortable. On land I’m usually dressed in The Bare Road – ethical fashion, denim, linen, silk and cotton, that pretty much covers it all hey?

What’s your favourite beer at the moment?
OH it’s hard to choose a favourite. I could never turn down a sour beer, and I’m sooo nerdy about spontaneous fermentation beer. 8 Wired, which is a brewery out of New Zealand, make a pretty amazing Berliner Weisse called the Hippy Berliner which I really love. I love The Grifter’s entire range from Sydney – sooo good. But I think my forever favourite is our Cloud Catcher.

Where is the ideal place to enjoy your favourite coldie?
The ideal place is anywhere I can watch the ocean and horizon! Watching water move around is calming – plus fresh air, good beer and good friends, winning.

Stone & Wood Welcomes Its New Owners

Our exciting next chapter...

With thirty eligible employees accepting the latest annual share offer, 72% of our team are now owners in the business.

Each year we welcome more of the team as partners and shareholders, after working for at least one year in the business.

It isn’t just about what we brew but how we do business. We’re committed to having our highly talented team be co-owners and share in the value they are creating.

The employee share scheme is one benefit of our Brewlife program which is built on ‘brewing a good life’, so we place great importance in bringing the right people on, who respect the vision and contribute to cultivating the brewery’s unique culture.

We believe that to create a sustainable business for generations to come, we all need to have ‘skin in the game’…

With a number of small breweries being bought out by large global brewers, and the same global brewers launching brands that on the surface look like small breweries, we are firmly focussed on remaining a local independent brewery that supports the community and creates value for its stakeholders.

Our Share Scheme not only gives the team a sense of pride and ownership when they come to work each day but it has the potential to generate a nest egg for them and their family over time…

We are inspired by the idea of being a village brewery and this includes the vision of all our employees becoming owners in the business in the future, alongside the founders.

We stand with other independent businesses who have taken the direction of employee ownership including New Belgium Brewing Co in The States which is 100% employee owned.

Ingrained Foundation Established

We've created a not-for-profit foundation!

As a national not-for-profit, the inGrained Foundation’s mission is to support grassroots, environmental and social charities in the local areas where funds are donated. By fostering long-term partnerships and responding to urgent situations of need, it aims to create sustained positive change by directing funds to support the community where and when it’s needed.

Since 2013, we have operated a community program under the inGrained banner which has raised and donated more than $630,000 to a long list of not-for-profits, grassroots organisations and individuals in their communities.

By establishing the inGrained Foundation, we’ve created a formal separate entity and have made the commitment to annually donate $1/100L of beer brewed to the not-for-profit going forward.

In addition to the annual donation, we will partner with inGrained for our own events, such as our annual Open Day in Murwillumbah (14 April) and Festival of the Stone (9 June), raising funds for nominated local charities in the area.

The Foundation will continue the great work our team have done towards achieving the vision of, helping grassroots organisations make meaningful progress in the community.

Inspired by the idea of being a village brewery and giving back to the community, the act of supporting the people who support us has always been a part of how we do business. The inGrained Foundation will now manage our donations going forward, together with raising further funds to create social change.

The inGrained Foundation plans to be a sustainable not-for-profit, by investing part of the funds in ethical investments.

The foundation will focus on building a pool of funds so that investment income can form a part of future funding streams. This means the community can rely on the foundation to help out future generations.

The inGrained Foundation will partner with aligned charities to create progress in their communities whilst also being able to provide timely support when the local community needs it most. In the future, a granting program will be established to provide a mechanism for charitable organisations to apply for funding.

UFRO System: Waste Water Not Wasted

Our commitment to treading lighter on the earth…

We’re taking the next step in wastewater treatment processing and have recently finished the commission of a new ultra-filtration & reverse osmosis system (UF-RO).

The system further treats the wastewater created during the brewing process, stripping everything out, to create clean and useable reclaimed water. 100% of the reclaimed water will be used for utilities (boilers, refrigeration etc.) and to wash-down the brewery.

We’re excited to continue implementing innovative technologies and processes to help reduce our brewery’s footprint on the environment. Whilst the reclaimed water is actually at drinking quality, we won’t be using this to brew with…

We currently treat all of our wastewater on site, however, with the instalment of the UF-RO, our upstream water supply consumption will be reduced by 15% and downstream, the amount of wastewater going into local council sewer network will also decrease.

Creating useable water from our waste stream, we’re also decreasing the total amount of water used at the brewery.

The installation of the UFRO forms part of our broader Green Feet strategy, which focuses on water, energy and waste impact, ensuring we are prioritising not just what we do, but how we do it.

Some of our other enviro initiatives include:

  • 95% of all solid waste is re-used or recycled. This includes grain as well as pack materials (glass, cardboard, plastic).
  • The implementation of #forcupssake, a re-usable cup exchange to stop single use cups being used at events and thrown in the trash
  • Boiler upgrades in conjunction with a NSW Govt. grant, reducing energy consumption by 20%
  • The installation of 480 solar panels at the Murwillumbah site – providing up to 10% of the site’s electricity use
  • The installation of an ammonia refrigeration system reducing electricity consumption by 6%

Hoppy Potato Ale

Find our Hoppy Potato Ale at Brewsvegas 2018

HOPPY POTATO ALE…

Dubbed the official Brewsvegas festival beer, we’re donating just over $16k (100% of the profits from beer sales). Half of the profits will support the continuation of Brisbane’s annual and week-long celebration of good beer (Brewsvegas), and the other half will be donated to OzHarvest – a nationwide food rescue organisation, who collect quality excess food from commercial outlets and deliver it directly to more than 1000 charities, supporting those in need across the country.

ABOUT THE BREW…

Did you know that 4 million tonnes of food end up as landfill, enough to fill 8,400 Olympic sized swimming pools?  What’s even crazier is that a lot of that food is often unspoilt and still edible. OzHarvest Brisbane collects some of this food, turning it into over 200,000 meals, which are delivered to 150 local agencies each and every month.

60kg of potatoes destined for landfill were saved and donated by Oz Harvest to put in this Stone & Wood beer for Brewsvegas. The addition of two types of potato adds additional starch and enhances the smooth body of the beer. At 6.0% ABV, this strong pale ale is bursting with a healthy dose Galaxy, Enigma and Fortnight hops giving it a high hop aroma and flavour of tropical fruit and citrus aroma with a firm bitterness. Medium body with light malt flavour and aroma.

WHERE TO FIND US AT BREWSVEGAS

We’re stoked to continue supporting Brewsvegas. In addition to the collab brew, our hard working Brissy Road Crew will be hosting a number of awesome events throughout the festival, and Clyde will be returning to our Old Museum event for another memorable Stone & Wood shin-dig.
